Tim Eriksen, leader of the “shape-note” tradition, experimentalist and ethnomusicologist, performs traditional ballads from the Appalachians to the Pioneer Valley and original pieces that have been described as “magical realism in song.”

Wednesday Folk Tradition, June 10—Tim Eriksen

For our first digital Wednesday folk performance, we bring you this hauntingly beautiful performance of ‘Hope’ by Tim Eriksen. This is an arrangement of a song written by Thomas Moore in 1816, originally published in his collection Sacred Songs and now found in various hymnals and compilations of religious melodies from the past couple of centuries. Eriksen discovered it in an 1848 tunebook, formerly belonging to Amelia Clark of Northampton (1850-1944), which he found at a flea market 30 years ago. In compilations, the song is referred to variously as ‘The Mourner’s Song,’ ‘Light in the Darkness,’ and, as it was originally published, ‘O Thou Who Dry’st The Mourner’s Tear’ (which is the first line of the song). Tim Eriksen’s rendition is entitled ‘Hope.’ Enjoy!

Other songs from Tim Eriksen include:

Every Sound Below, an original song that appeared in the film Behold The Earth

Aber Dojde Donke, a Macedonian folk song

Amazing Grace, a Christian hymn written by John Newton in 1772

Zikina

Zikina.jpeg

Zikina - featuring Uganda native Gideon Ampeire, plays an exciting fusion of Ugandan folk music with contemporary influences. Ampeire draws you in with traditional East African vocals and instruments including enanga, adungu, and kalimba - all of which he builds himself. Mike Cardozo, Roston Kirk and Kade Parkin ensconce Gideon’s vocals within a sonic landscape that flows seamlessly from intense grooves to joyous dance beats to dreamy textures with Gideon’s vocals cutting powerfully through the fabric or floating lightly above.

Wednesday Folk Tradition, June 24— Zikina

“Zikina is a group of people who came from across continents and cultures to show that despite all the forces in the world that emphasize our differences, we can come together to make something beautiful and new. It doesn’t take long for this music to get you dancing, clapping along, connecting with the people around you, and savoring the beauty of the present moment.”
