Darling Gladys, I’m so glad to hear from you - I refer to your letter of the 28th which I wish I had begun answering in time to catch you in Copenhagen. Now it is quite too late. Well, what you tell me about your evening makes me feel him to be very human - but not in a very nice way. It also illustrates for me a particular idea of mine: [viz?], that the world is governed more by pique, rancour, feelings of slight, the "inferiority complex", etc. much more than is realized. The future historian, certainly,

will analyze the causes of the approaching war in [???] terms. Collectively, as well as in their representative ruling figures, Italy & Germany are going to war more out of wounded vanity, & rancour(e) rather out of any legitimate sense of injustices to be redressed or even avenged. The wrongs have been committed, the injustices have existed, but they are going to war largely in order to satify pettier spites.

I’m glad the evening ended well. It seems to me that you are liquidating their affair both outwardly and within yourself as well as can be expected, taking [the?] Kitty complication info account.

That kind of jealousy is a bit I have experience I don’t happen to have had. But I well might have!

Aug. 7th

I hope it hasn’t rained all the time, for that does make such a difference when one is living in Hotels. I am feeling so water-logged and heavy. It will be nice to see you again. I am working; & it has become a habit; and I’m not good for anything else now. I do hope this letter (dull as it is!) will reach you in Stockholm all right.

Goodbye - & “[may ships?]” to you too - with knobs on.

Leo

I am so much afraid the blasted weather is getting you down!
